Volcanic Eruptions

We created our own volcanic eruption in a bottle this afternoon. We used hydrogen peroxide, dish soap, and a little bit of food coloring to make it even cooler. We then added yeast that had been dissolved in warm water to the mixture and that's when the magic happened! The mixture of chemicals created a chemical reaction and the mixture foamed and exploded.

After we had finished our own personal volcanoes, Mrs. Owen showed us a bigger eruption using high powered chemicals we were not allowed to touch. (The high grade of peroxide she had could burn our skin, so we had to watch!) The eruption was even bigger than the ones we had created in our bottles! A lot of heat was produced in both experiments. Why is this? When a chemical reaction occurs, it creates energy. As more energy is produced, heat is created. Check out the photo album below to see pictures from our volcanic adventure!

Attendance and Parent Pick-Up

Savvy Scientists is a hands on after school club. Please remember your child was chosen from a long list of people who applied to be a part of the club. Therefore, attendance is MANDATORY! If your child is absent due to illness or some other sort of school wide excused absence, please be sure to email or call to let me know he/she will not be able to attend that day. Two unexcused absences will result in your child losing his/her spot in the club. A student on the wait list will then be chosen to take his/her spot.

All students should be picked up from Savvy Scientists at the bus loop by 4:00pm. Any student not picked up by the designated time will be sent to EDEP for a fee. Your child will not be able to participate if an EDEP form is not on file. Remember, by filling out the form, you are only agreeing to the terms above, NOT enrolling them in EDEP full time.
